Hello all,

I am working on a competitive analysis project on Europes top VoIP
(voice over IP) countries. My focus is on consumer software products
such as Skype, Yahoo!Messenger, AOLs AIM etc. I am very much
interested in understanding the German market. Not speaking German, it
has been a challenge...

I have not found any local products yet, but I am sure they are there!

So, what I need are some insights on the market situation. I have a
general ISP and telecom view, but no latest VoIP trends. What are the
local most important competitors? How do they promote themselves? Any
alliances with ISPs or start-up phone companies? How do they compete
with global products such as Skype, MSN, Yahoo! etc? As a German, would
you choose a company "just because" it is from Germany?

I would say 1&1, T-Online, Sipgate, Freenet, GMX and AOL.

There are some VoIP-only companies, but in general ISPs offer VoIP.
T-Online is part of Deutsche Telekom group, the largest telco in
Europe.

Many of them offer flatrates for calling German landlines. In most
cases for about 10 EUR/month. Some of them offer geographical num-
bers, some of them IN-numbers (0180 etc.). Geographical numbers
can only be get for areas where you live or work in.

German providers often have more competetive prices. And it is not
the worst to have a contract with a company acting under German law.
